Vespa Alarms Available for GT/S and LX

vespaalarm.jpgOn the heels of the story about stolen scooters, we came across this piece of security equipment, made by Vespa, that can be added to GT, GTS and LX models.

The electric alarm is operated via key fob and will sound a 30-second alarm if activated. Cost for the GT/S version is $198, the LX model goes for $190. Vespa.com says it's available only through dealers.

Stolen Scooter Registry at Scoot.net

stolen.jpgIt's unfortunate that such a resource is necessary, but Scoot.net has a stolen scooter registry where 311 bikes are listed as having been lifted.

The info on the page says listing will remain posted indefinitely, so it's difficult to tell how many, if any, of the stolen scooters have been recovered.

From a quick survey of the entries, most of the owners that supplied information say their scooters were stolen when they were parked outside, in front or in back of houses and apartment complexes. Many of them were both locked with chains and were without keys in the ignition, so the typical theft looks to be those who have transport vehicles and who may or may not have the ability to retrofit ignitions and other broken parts.

Or it's just crackheads who are too stupid to know they can't do anything with them.

Moped Muggers Give Scootering a Bad Name

BadMoped.jpgA couple two-wheeling UK hooligans have been using their scoot to mug pedestrians, according to this Telegraph article.

Apparently there are two men doing the deeds, on a single red moped, and both wearing silver helmets. The muggers have so far been able to elude police using alleyways to zip away.

Maybe a scootering vigilante squad is what's called for here.

Piaggio President to President Bush: Encourage Scootering to Save Gas

Piaggiologo.jpgIn a letter to President Bush that was also sent to America's mayors, Piaggio USA President Paolo Timoni says that scooters are a proven way to cut down on gas consumption.

Timoni's letter, which you can read here, acknowledges that while technological changes are important, so are behaviorial ones. Scooters, which can reduce gas consumption by 58% per person if used for short trip, are "only marginally embraced in the United States," Timoni writes.

With millions of people in Europe and Asia using scooters on a daily basis, Timoni argues that "scootering would bring immediate and substantial economic and environmental benefits to Americans and the communities in which they live."

Piaggio USA is the company that imports and sells Vespa, Aprilia and Piaggio scooters in the United States. Timoni's letter appeared as a full-page ad in The New York Times.

Vectrix Maxi-Scooter Revolutionizes Electric Market

Vectrix.jpg

The Vectrix Maxi Scooter is coming to a US city near you in 2006, and its specs -- over 60 mph max speed and 60 miles on a charge, are bringing electric scooters into and even beyond performance expectations for gas scooters. One of the bennies is that it has on-board regenerative braking, like a hybrid car, that helps recapture energy as you drive.

No price has been announced yet, but you can check out this cool video at their site.

Vectrix is also working on a fuel cell scooter, but is planning to make the plug-in electric their first official entry into the marketplace.
