Wonderful World of Scooters
There are a number of reasons people buy Scooters, the cost of gas this year certainly inspired many that might never have considered the Scooter as transport. With the cost of gas declining slightly, the sale of Scooters continues to rise.
Many new purchasers will have either never ridden or will have been away from Scooters for many years. Here are some tips to making sure that the ride you buy doesn’t end up alongside that all-in-one gym in the garage collecting dust.
Give consideration to what you are going to use your Scooter for. If it is going to be your daily commuter and you live in the same city as you work then you have a wide selection available to you. Anything up to 125cc will easily meet your needs, and a smaller machine would definitely meet your needs if you face a lot of stop start, in town traffic.
Scooters come in a variety of shapes and sizes. As do their riders. Matching the two is key to having a successful relationship with your new ride. Buying just on looks is a recipe for an unhappy relationship. Think about how long you intend to spend on that seat, sure its nice and soft now but will it be supportive and comfortable after an hours ride? Where are the controls, do your hands fall nicely to them? are you over-reaching to put hands on the grips? These are not only comfort issues but control issues. An uncomfortable rider who fumbles with the controls is more likely to have an accident.
Of course looks matter. Are you more attracted to the retro-styled, vintage models or a the slick new modern look? Use online resources to make that decision. Having narrowed it down then start visiting showrooms. Just heading out to the showroom is likely to have you regretting your purchase when you see something that fits your personality overtake you on the street.
Just as with any motor vehicle, when you buy new you are paying for the gleam, the almost negligible mileage and the kudos of owning something brand new. You are also facing the fact that as soon as you ride away from the dealership you lose money. Typically a Scooter can lose up to 30% of its value in the first year. Given that many of them are used only for commuting their mileage tends toward the low side. So if you are looking for a machine that is only going to be used for occasional commuting or you are just getting back into riding and really aren’t sure that this is for you, why not buy used. Sure you will forgo the joy of new ownership but you can save a bunch of money and if that is the goal of obtaining a Scooter than why not start there.
Good luck with your purchase, remember these tips and you are sure to end up in a happy relationship with your new ride.
The Wonderful world of scooters, continues to grow in popularity amoung consumers, its expected to outsell motorbikes in China and developing nations by 2010.
