Wonderful World of Scooters
Harley Davidson is not a name that most people associate with Scooters. The image of Easy Riders, bikers, large rallies come to mind but not necessarily Scooters.
But Harley Davidson did in fact produce a Scooter from 1960 to 1965. It was powered by a 160cc 2-stroke single and was started with a recoil system similar to a lawnmower.
The engine went thru several revisions over the five year lifespan. It all began with the 9HP A model from 1960-1961. During this time Harley also came out with a 5HP AU model to meet state requirements for licensing to young people. In 1961 the A model was replaced with a 9HP AH model. The H designated high compression.
The Wonderful world of scooters, continues to grow in popularity amoung consumers, its expected to outsell motorbikes in China and developing nations by 2010.

I owned one purchased late 1959 which I think was the first sold in Atlanta. I rode the bike every day to highschool (15 miles each way) for 3 years then to college back and forth from Atlanta to Clemson SC. It was durable and would keep you dry on a rainy day with the big shield and windscreen. I racked up over 60,000 miles on it then gave it away when I went in the Navy. It was a fantastic little bike and pure fun to ride. With the big tires I could go down logging road-trails and not mire up like the cushman Eagle or Husky.
