Commuting to work or doing your grocery shopping on a scooter can be good for the environment, easy on your pocketbook, and lots of fun, but it can also be dangerous. When riding a scooter, the burden of staying safe is on the person riding the scooter, not on the automobile drivers that share the road. The reason for this is simple: In a crash, the scooter rider is going to lose, no matter who was technically correct in terms of traffic laws. Helmets and defensive driving are a must.

  • The following tips can also help keep you safe when riding:
  • Always wear bright or reflective clothing.
  • Stay out of a car’s blind spot.
  • Remember your mirrors only give you a partial view of what is behind you.
  • Don’t go faster than the speed limit and watch out for unexpected maneuvers from cars.
  • Use extra caution at intersections.
  • Reduce your speed over rough roads and terrain.
