According to a recent article on the new website Motorsportbusiness.com, many motorcycle dealerships are looking to make up for lost profit on big bikes and choppers by carrying more scooters. Phillip McCaleb, founder and President of Genuine Scooter Co, told the trade publication in an interview recently that while chopper sales are falling with the economic downturn, scooter sales are suddenly off the chart. “For most of the world, nothing says practical transportation like scooters. Outside of Sturgis or Daytona, you don’t often use the word swarm to describe two-wheeled traffic here. But in Europe and Asia, you’ll see swarms of scooters everywhere you look.”

He noted that U.S. seems to be headed that direction too, saying, “It will be many years before scooters reach that point in the US. But as roadways get more crowded and gas gets more expensive, you’d better believe we’re headed in that direction. It’s not a matter of if, but when. There’s more to it than that, though. Scooters are also a hot trend. The next time you’re at Borders or Barnes & Noble, page through a fashion magazine. You’ll be amazed at how many models you’ll see posed next to scooters.”
