Not all states require insurance on scooters, but most do, and even in states in which insurance isn’t a requirement, it’s a good idea. Even if you feel your scooter wasn’t a significant enough investment to warrant insurance, the issue of liability alone makes it worth having. Scooter insurance doesn’t have to cost a fortune either. Scooter-news.com recently compared insurance rates at three different companies—Progressive, Geico, and Esurance—for three new scooter models and three used ones.

The new models compared were the Vespa LX50, the Yamaha Vino 125, and the Vespa GTS250. The used models were a ’65 Honda Super Cub, a a ’63 Lambretta Ll150, and an ’05 Suzuki Burgman. All policies on all the scooters were less than $500 per year for full coverage with $500 deductibles. The least expensive was to ’65 Honda Super Cub at only $75 per year. The most expensive was an Esurance quote on the Vespa GTS250 for $485 for a year. All scooters were less than $50 a month to fully insure.
