Sufat, the largest scooter manufacturer in Vietnam, announced it will start production of a group of electric scooters powered by a novel motor said to deliver a similar performance to petrol-engine scooters. Sufat says that the electric scooters will go from zero to 50MPH in less than ten seconds, and will hit top speeds of 80 MPH, which twice as fast as most currently available electric scooters. The Sufat scooters will be powered by transmission-less wheel-hub motors developed by a US company, KLD Energy Technologies. The motors are high-frequency, low-rpm and use a nano-crystalline material that conducts heat much more efficiently than conventional iron cores. This improved conduction reduces the motor’s operating temperature, allowing it to safey go faster more quickly.

Texas-based KLD has setting up an assembly plant in Hanoi to produce the motors for Sufat. The company plans to produce around 2,000 motors per month to start, but then will ramp up production later to meet Sufat’s production target of 50,000 electric scooters in its first year. Vietnam is a lucrative scooter market, with more than 22 million scooters already on its roads.
