The University of South Florida has announced that starting in 2009 its football team will accomplish all of its travel on a fleet of Vespa scooters. The decision was made in response to recent announcements of cost cutting procedures planned by football teams at Florida State, Tallahassee Community College, and the University of Miami. “This is our way of continuing to prove that we are a major school in the state,” said USF Athletics Director Doug Woolard. “We can cut back just as much and in some cases even more than the other big guys.”

The Florida school spent about what it would have cost to fly the team to and from an away game to purchase the entire fleet of scooters (which of course they can use more than once). The most distant away game is in Storrs, Connecticut, which will take the team approximately 23 hours to reach on their Vespas, which have a top cruising speed of 55 MPH.
