It was good while it lasted but it seems that scooters in Columbus will now have to settle parking fees if they are to park in certain areas. The City of Columbus will break the ice as it will reportedly require an annual permit to park scooters, motorcycles and mopeds at its designated “corrals.”

The good news is the cost is $50, far less than typical rates for cars.

The city plans to double the number of spaces for two-wheeled, motorized vehicles from the existing 267 spaces in 23 locations Downtown, in the Short North and in the Brewery District, said Mary Carran Webster, assistant director in the city’s Public Service Department.

Webster said the $50 fee covers staff costs, including making the signs and marking pavement.

“This is not an effort to make money for the city,” she said.

Enforcement starts April 1, but the first week will be to educate riders, Webster said.

Scooters, cycles and mopeds also can be parked at metered spaces, and multiple two-wheelers can use the same space as long as the meter is fed. If it expires, all the vehicles in that space can be ticketed.
